Happy Bettie Mann Day! Yesterday we had a wonderful visit from Ms. Mann, who was the first African American teacher at our school and namesake of our kindergarten wing. She read to our kindergartners and spoke to our 6th graders about leadership. Thank you to LEAP for the beautiful “Happy Bettie Mann Day” banner that can be used every year for this joyous occasion.
Last Sunday we experienced a break in at our school in the early morning hours. We are working with AISD Police to inventory the items that were taken by the single intruder and make certain that all security precautions are in place to prevent any other break ins. I will update you on any information that becomes available.
This coming Tuesday we will have the December PTA meeting at 3:00 in the library. The following week is the last week before our winter break. That Tuesday afternoon will hold our monthly CAC meeting, which will be on the topic of Recapture, the funding structure that sends much of the local tax revenue from Austin to other parts of the state. This CAC meeting will serve as the first of several conversations on the topic, which greatly impacts the services and resources we are able to provide to our students in AISD. More information on Recapture can be found here – https://www.austinisd.org/budget/recapture and here – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRCjW4DJ68s
Celebrations, our annual winter program, will be taking place on the evening of Wednesday December 19th. There will be two shows that night, and Amigos de Russell Lee will be hosting their International Dinner in the cafeteria. We will also host a grandparents program on that Tuesday at 1:30 for extended family. There will be a short reception following the grandparents performance in the library. An email with ticket information for the night performances of Celebrations will be sent out this week.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Principal – Russell Lee Elementary School
