Roadrunner Rundown – Parent Education Series

Roadrunner Families,
I want to start by congratulating our 2nd graders and their teachers on a magnificent Mexico Program. It was a great celebration of the rich history and culture of Mexico and our 2nd graders did a wonderful job. The Special Areas Team has worked very hard in collaboration with parents and each grade level through the course of the year to update our grade level programs. This program was a great example of that work.

Thank you to all who helped with Teacher Appreciation Week and celebrated all the things our teachers do to bring learning to life at Lee Elementary. Special thanks to Dana Stauffer and the team of parents who came in over the weekend to decorate teachers’ doors. It was a very thoughtful act that was appreciated by all. We are so fortunate to have such a talented teaching staff here at our school. Thank you for helping us celebrate them.

Next week is full of adult learning opportunities. On Monday May 7, there will be a free screening of the film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety at the Mac Theater at McCallum High School, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. It will be followed by a panel discussion with community mental health experts. On Tuesday, May 8th the PTA will be hosting a “How to Talk to Your Kids About Race” panel discussion beginning at 6:30 pm in our library. Childcare and pizza will be provided. Then on Thursday morning at 8:00 am we will host a presentation on how to “Be a S.M.A.R.T. Parent” with Sharon Goldblatt. Every parent wants their child to live a happy, successful life, but how am I going to help them get there? The “how” is the million-dollar question! Become a SMART parent and understand how to have a meaningful partnership with those who most often influence our children – their teachers.

In an effort to better incorporate parent and family input into our class placement process, we are sending home a sheet entitled “Information for Class Placements”. There will also be additional copies available in the front office. Please take the opportunity to fill out this form and return it by next Friday, May 11th.

Lastly, I want to update everyone on the status of the Registered Sex Offender who was living adjacent to our school. I have been working closely with the property landlord and he has confirmed that the tenant in question has moved out and is no longer residing in Austin. I will keep everyone updated if there is any additional information to share. Thank you for your advocacy and patience with this process.

Have a wonderful weekend,

John Hewlett
