Roadrunner Rundown – Counselor Appreciation Week

February 2, 2019

Friday was the first day of Black History Month. Each day we will be sharing information during morning announcements about Black History and the significant contributions made by African Americans to the culture of our nation. We began by sharing that the celebration of Black History Month was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the nation’s bicentennial. The month of February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make our Science Fair such a success. Special thanks to Tom Yankeelov and his team of volunteer judges. I want to congratulate the following students who will be representing our school at the Regional Science Fair:

Next week is Counselor Appreciation Week and we have a number of important events happening at our school. On Tuesday we will be hosting our Social Emotional Learning – Book Study in the library at 8:00 am. On Wednesday we will be visited by author Judd Winick. Then on Thursday evening we will be holding our annual Social Emotional Learning Night at 6:00 pm followed by our monthly PTA meeting at 7:00. Childcare will be provided. We hope you will be able to join us for some of these important events and please help us celebrate our amazing counselor Ms. Gilbert and all she does for our Roadrunners.

Lastly, I want to share the following document for all of our students dealing with food allergies. Completing this form and turning it in to our cafeteria manager, Loren Wyatt will help improve our awareness level when students are purchasing food items in the cafeteria. If your student has any type of food allergy we also ask that you contact our School Health Team to make them aware of the allergy and any related requirements. Thank you for your assistance. https://www.austinisd.org/sites/default/files/dept/nutrition-food-services/docs/Request_for_Dietary_Accommodation.pdf
