This year we will be continuing our sponsorship of “Libraries of Love “ to help make books available to students that need our assistance. Libraries of Love partners with Uganda to create libraries in individual schools. They build bookshelves in empty classrooms, sort and stock donated books to create school libraries. For more information, go to the Libaries of Love website.
The mission of the library is to nurture a lifelong appreciation of reading and learning by assuring that students and staff have opportunities for access, use and evaluation of information and literature.
Students come to the library on a weekly schedule and at other times designated by their teacher.
Students are encouraged to check out one book to read independently and another book of their choice.
Students are encouraged to demonstrate responsibility by returning or renewing books on time and exercising proper care of library materials.
Checkouts are for 2 weeks. A renewal period is available for older students with longer books being used for classroom projects and reports.
Lost books should be reported to the librarian. Arrangements will be made for the student to continue using library books while searching for the lost book. If a book is not found by the end of school, a notice of the cost of the book will be sent home. Paying for lost books will clear student records for the district.
Students are provided with lessons by the librarian related to reading skills, research, curriculum coordination, library usage and appreciation and understanding of the various materials.
Library programming may consist of story time with the librarian, activities to explore and understand the library and visiting authors. Attention is given to various genre of literature and the award winning books such as Newbery, Caldecott, Coretta Scott King, Bluebonnet and Lone Star.
Our special project for 2009 is collecting books for new school libraries in Uganda. We contribute new and gently used books through Libraries of Love. See www.librariesoflove.org for more information.
Parents volunteer in the library in a variety of ways. They are an essential component of our library program to enable the librarian to have more access to children and their needs and for developing programming and curriculum support. Please see the librarian if interested.
Parents are welcome to visit the library before and after school to check out books to read with children or from our parent support shelves.
Please see the link "AISD Online resources" to the right for more information.
Two Scholastic Book Fairs are held during the school year to benefit our library. Parent assistance is needed to setup and take down the displays and to collect money for books. The library receives a portion of the profits as a credit for books and the remaining portion as funds to be spent as needed to maintain the library.
